How to Plant and Care for Shallots
- Choose and open sunny site preferably with some shelter from strong winds
- Prepare the soil and remove any weeds
- Remove any long ‘tails’
- Push bulbs into soil 1cm deep and leave 30-40cm (12-16in) between rows
- Plant 15 cm (6in) between shallot leaving the tips protruding above the soil so that the birds are less likely topull them out
- Water the soil if necessary until the shallots are established
- On heavy soils or sites prone to waterlogging, plant in a raised bed
Harvesting Shallots
- Lift when foliage turns yellow
- Allow to dry out before storing in a frost free place
